My name is Bonnie Symes, PT , I’m a graduate of Full Body Systems-Functional Nutrition and Lifestyle Practitioner program and a physical therapist living in South Wales, NY. I’ve been practicing as a PT for over 23 years, working with adults and children in helping them improve/regain their movement, strength and function in their homes, in the clinic and in schools. I use modern manual therapy techniques including: kinesiotaping, IASTM, compression bands and analyzing movement patterns to help people regain pain-free and more natural movement of their bodies. I have a love of animals, with 3 cats, a dog and chickens at our home in the country. I am a competitive athlete, into riding and racing my bike on the trails and on cyclocross courses with my friends. My favorite thing to do is spend time in nature doing cycling, hiking, trail running, swimming, etc. I have competed in USAC Cyclocross Nationals the past 2 years in a row with podium finishes(3rd and 4th in my age group), even with an injury that sidelined me for part of the season last year. I want to help people reach their dreams by improving their health as I have!
My mission in health started when I was very young. I learned that heart disease runs in my family since my grandparents both died young of heart attacks. I dove into every health and wellness book /magazine I could find in order to help myself and those I love to live a healthier life. I started having panic attacks and severe anxiety in my senior year in high school which seemed to come out of nowhere. I’ve always had issues with food, stress and eating since I was young but couldn't figure out how to resolve these on my own and no doctor I went to could help. Counseling has always been a part of my life in helping me to cope with anxiety but it didn’t address the root cause of my issues. I also took anxiety medications that helped initially but eventually contributed to my fatigue, increased anxiety, nervous system problems and poor sleep. I was so stressed every day at work and had chronic insomnia that I couldn’t function well and suffered from chronic anxiety, headaches, chronic neck pain, poor focus/brain fog and rashes.
I’d been studying and researching causes of anxiety and my other health issues for years and did not start to put two and two together until I went to a functional medicine practitioner several years ago. He put me on a ketogenic diet, which helped me figure out the diet/nutrition connection to my anxiety. This diet was not sustainable for me, but I had never felt so good in years. I found I still needed to dig deeper and figure out what was causing my chronic pain/tension in my neck/back, chronic insomnia, digestive problems and other health issues that were plaguing me. I decided to start the Full Body Systems course- Functional Nutrition and Lifestyle practitioner training with Andrea Nakayama; this changed my life. This program helped me to resolve my digestive issues, get off of the medications I had been taking for years for anxiety along with addressing the other root causes of my anxiety and got me on the road to recovery. I also started doing this program as a way to help others get their life and energy back. I had done counseling with a therapist for many years with little success until I improved my diet/nutrition, lifestyle factors, resolved my digestive issues and addressed my chronic insomnia; it was then that I noticed my anxiety lessened so much that I could function at my job with much better focus and enjoy the work that I was doing with tons of energy.
I now teach clients how to tune into their own bodies, find the root cause of their illnesses, figure out how to support their recovery and healing from chronic illness such as chronic pain, anxiety, depression, autoimmune diseases, hormone issues, weight loss, etc. I also work with athletes in enhancing their sports performance with nutrition and lifestyle changes.
